Case Studies
Case Study: Meera (name changed) was a 35 year old woman living in a joint family.
She had two children and lived with her parents and inlaws. After the birth of her second child,
she started feeling a little low in mood with lack of interest and less sleep. When she presented
to us, she was having less sleep, negative thoughts, crying spells and a sense of low
confidence since 5 months. She had issues with in-laws but no other major stressors.
Her husband was very supportive and concerned. Meera then confessed that she had had these symptoms
once in college and her mother also had these bouts quite often. She thought that these
symptoms were not important and was hesitant to approach a mental health professional
After a history and mental state examination she was started on medications for depression and
counselling was also started for her adjustment problems. Meera also had a genetic history which
was explained to her. Meera today has started going to work and has understood the importance of a good mental health
Case study: Rohan is a 7 year old boy with history of throwing temper tantrums, nightmares,
feeling scared while going to school and hitting his brother since few months. The history revealed
a strict father and on further probing from Rohan he mentioned that his class teacher was demeaning
him in front of others and making fun of his work. As a result he was bullied at school.
A family history was taken and some symptoms of hyperactivity were mentioned by the mother.
Screening tests for hyperactivity were done slong with projective test to understand Rohans state of mind.
The family was counselled and telephonic conversations with a very helpful school counsellor helped Rohan
to stabilize. Rohan came for a few sessions of EMDR which helped him in sleep and reduce his aggression.
